Colletes cunicularius (Linnaeus, 1761)

A univoltine species: Flies in March and April. The species may still be flying in late June in Finland, and in July in Spain.

Parasites: Parastised by Sphecodes albilabris (Westrich, 1989; Söderman & Leinonen, 2003).

Pheromomes: Recent studies have reported that the female sexual signals (i.e., sex pheromones) consist of cuticular hydrocarbons (fatty compounds that cover the female body) (Mant et al. 2005) and that these signals differ among populations in the ways that "dialects" do (Vereecken et al. 2007). In the Mediterranean region, males of C. cunicularius pollinate several species in the orchid genus Ophrys, which attract their pollen vectors by mimicking the female sex pheromone of the targeted species (Mant et al. 2005).
