A univoltine species; early June to late August. In Spain, the flight period is from April to September (Ornosa & Ortiz-Sánchez, 2004) and in Cyprus, it flies from May to July (Mavromoustakis, 1948)
In Israel, C. O'Toole (pers. comm.) examined a female of this species in the Israeli National Insect Collection in Tel Aviv bearing a lump of pollen externally in its clypeal concavity, the provision apparently supported from below by the pair of blunt, lateral, clypeal processes. Following this remarkable observation, several specimens in the NHML were found to have traces of pollen present in their clypeal concavities (pers. obs.). Many subsequent field observations in Britain have shown this to occur frequently (pers. obs). This pollen is discoloured, having a quite different appearance from the usual dry grains which frequently adhere to the hairs arising from the legs and elsewhere. The discoloration seems to result from the pollen load having been moistened with nectar, a process which presumably consolidates the presumed provision, aiding its transport to the nest. It is not known if nectar and pollen are also carried in the crop, as is usual in other females in this genus.
