A univoltine species. The overwintering Queens appear in early May and commence nest building immediately. The new generation of Queens emerge in mid-August, and the males in early August. The flight period extends to October (Westrich, 1989)
ssp. paradoxus is listed as RDB2 (EN) in Moldova. The nominate subspecies is also listed as RDB4 (NT).
