The species occurs throughout most of Europe from southern Fennoscandia to the south of France (Dordogne), Austria; and eastwards to the Caucasus and Transcaspia (Osychnjuk, 1977).

Although populations are small and very locally distributed, there is no information available on the size of the population, since most of the published records are older than 20 years.
In western Europe, A. hattorfiana has been facing a dramatic decline for the last 60 years (Pekkarinen 1997) and therefore the trend of this population is thought to be decreasing (Larsson 2006).
