This species belongs to a group of very closely related species, the females of which are extremely difficult to distinguish from one another. Thus the European distribution of the present species is based entirely on males. The range extends from southern Sweden (Gotland) and Britain, east to the Volga; in southern Europe it occurs in isolated pockets, in southern Italy and, further east, from St. Petersburg to Azerbaydzhan (Ebmer, 1988) and into central Asia:
