Distribution; world
The species is widespread throughout much of Europe (Scheuchl 2000; Amiet et al. 2007), the range extending south from southern Finland (Elfving, 1968) to north Africa and eastwards to western Asia and the Caucasus:

It is the only common and widespread species of this genus across Europe. It is more common in northern and central Europe, while in southern Europe other species (E. transitorius, E. cruciger, or local endemics) are usually more common (Bogusch & Hadrava, 2018).
