Distribution; world
Widely distributed throughout northern and central Europe, but more sporadic in the south, mainly in the mountains (F.K. Stöckhert, 1933). It also occurs in north-west Africa. The range extends eastwards across Asia Minor into the Caucasus and central Asia:
