Widely distributed in central and southern Europe, north-western Africa, Anatolia the Levant and the Caucasus (Koster, 1986). In the Alps it reaches an altitude of 1500m.

Abundance; world
As in Britain, there has been an apparent increase in the populations of this species in the Netherlands (south Limburg) in recent years, where it was formerly very rare; e.g. on railway embankments in Maastricht it occurred in abundance in 1986 (1520-2000 specimens) (Koster, 1986b).
