Distribution; world
A Holarctic bee, widely distributed throughout most of Europe, north Africa, and North America. The European range extends from southern Fennoscandia (where it is rare (Aurivillius, 1903; Elfving, 1968)), south and east to the Balearic Islands (Menorca) and Greece. In north Africa it occurs in Morocco and Algeria. It is also known from central Asia (Warncke, 1981). In North America it is known from Nova Scotia to Minnesota, south to North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska; Idaho (where probably adventive (Hurd in Krombein et al., 1979)). ssp. cyanea is restricted to north Africa and Asia Minor:
