Distribution; world
Widely distributed in continental Europe, from southern Finland (Elfving, 1968) south to Spain and east to Turkey, Ukraine and Armenia. In north Africa, from the Canary Islands and Morocco to Egypt (Warncke, 1973). Several subspecies have been described for populations within this range (see Warncke, 1973). It is common in the Caspian coastal provinces of Iran, from sea level to 2200 m (D.B. Baker, pers. comm.).
