Lasioglossum (Leuchalictus) zonulum (Smith, 1848)

Excavator: Ground. Nests are established in open sunny locations. The nest entrance is surrounded by a tumulus about 5cm wide and 5mm high. The main burrow is almost vertical. At a depth of about 20cm it ends with widened blind burrow. About 10cm below the surface, laterals branch off, each with a brood cell at its end. The lateral burrows are about 2cm apart, and about 2cm in length. The cells are pear shaped, with narrowed necks.

The pollen is stored as an irregular lump, and is tightly attached to the polished cell wall. Afetr nesting is complete, the young females hibernate in the natal nest along with the foundress. The female foundress can live for two years. (various references cited in Pesenko, Banaszak et al., 2000).

A solitary species (Westrich, 1989).
