Excavator: Ground. B. Jacobi (pers. comm.) found nests excavated in between herbs in a short grassy sward in Crete

In Malta, a huge aggregation of many thousands of nests was found in disturbed ground scheduled for building (Roberts 1918, pers. obs.). The nest density was up to 160 nests per square metre and covered bare ground and among the adjacent vegetation. The highest nest densities were in compacted ground.
