Lasioglossum (Sphecodogastra) nigripes (LEPELETIER, 1841)

Excavator: Ground. Nests may be constructed in sand or loess, and form small aggregations (2-6 nests) The species is eusocial, with the gynes establishing their nests in the spring. The brood of workers and a few males emerge in the summer. Later in the season, the new generation of gynes and a cohort of larger males are produced. (Various refs, cited in Westrich, 1989).

At the end of June, observations were made of females provisioning and building burrows and brood cells (Marikovskaya, 1990). The entrance of the nest burrow has a diameter 45mm with an initial part, narrowed to 2.5mm. The nest extends downward to a depth of from 7 to 25cm. The cells were placed at a depth of from 4 to 17cm, The cells are ellipsoidal in shape, tapering towards the front end to 3-3.5mm. The inner surface is polished and shiny, the cell entrance is sealed with a plug some of 1.5-2mm thick. The stored food is formed into the shape of a ball. The egg is arcuate and is placed on top of the provision. The cells are 10mm in length and have a maximum diameter of 4.4-5mm.
