Halictus (Seladonia) subauratus (Rossi, 1792)

Excavator: Ground. Westrich (1989) reports that this species usually nests in small aggregations. The nest consists of brood cells which normally open directly into the main, long, vertical burrow. However, in moist sand the cell groups are surrounded by a cavity.

The species is primitively eusocial, each mature nest containing about 4 or 5 workers (Bellman, 1995).

Aparently in Poland, the species can form immense nesting aggregations on slopes with sandy soils. Solitary nests are also encountered, and these may be established in areas of clay soil, in sparsely vegetated places exposed to the sun. (Pesenko, Banaszak et al., 2000)
