Andrena (Melandrena) nigroaenea (KIRBY, 1802)

Excavator: Ground. The species is said to nest solitarily, most commonly in loamy soil (Kocourek, 1966; Dylewska, 1987). However, the species may sometimes nest communally, as several females have been observed using a common nest entrance (Westrich, 1989). At a brownfield site in Northumberland (UK) the bee nests in a huge aggregation, estimated to number c. 90,000 bees (L. Hislop, 2019, pers. comm)
