Renter: Existing cavities. This species nests in a variety of cavities, including holes in tree trunks (Niemelä, 1936), old roofing timbers of a house (Stelfox, 1924), decaying stumps of Cytisus scoparius, and in sand (E. Saunders, 1894). The bee will also excavate its nesting burrow in dead, broken Rubus stems of large diameter (Danks, 1971b; and pers. obs.). The cell walls and partitions often consist of Rosa leaf sections. The cells Danks studied were 6-7 mm in diameter and 10.5- 17.5 mm in length. A provisioned cell is illustrated by Westrich (1989), and an entire nest by Bellmann (1995).
Danks also describes the prepupa and figures its head capsule.
