Renter: Existing cavities. Nests in existing cavities (eg beetle emergence holes).

Nests have not been described from Britain, but both sexes have been seen entering burrows in felled, decaying trunks and other rotten wood.

Specimens have been reared from a nest in a dead, dry Phragmites stem collected in Austria (NHML). In France, it is reported to nest in Rubus stems (Benoist, 1959). Westrich (1989) also cites dead Rubus stems as nest sites.

Found in the Alps and Pyrenees to an altitude of 1900m (Dathe, 1980)
