Sphecodes rubicundus VON HAGENS, 1875

Cleptoparasitic: Hosts; A cleptoparasite of Andrena labialis (e.g. Morley, 1899; R.C.L. Perkins, 1919; Guichard & Yarrow, 1948; Chambers, 1949). It may also attack A. flavipes (Hallett, 1928; Chambers, 1949); M. Edwards (pers. comm.) has seen both sexes of this Sphecodes emerging from burrows of A. flavipes in a nesting aggregation of this Andrena near Newhaven, East Sussex. At Sandown, Isle of Wight, it has been seen flying with both these Andrenas (pers. obs.). Richards (1979) states that this Sphecodes attacks A. agilissima on Guernsey.

In Germany, Torka (1926, 1927) found the cleptoparasite flying about the nesting site of Andrena agilissima and considered the latter to be its host in this locality.

Celary (1991) lists the following as possible hosts: Andrena agilissima, A. nigroaenea and A. labialis.

Adults of both sexes are fully developed by late August (Sladen 1895), but remain in their natal cells throughout the following winter, finally emerging from the nest in the spring.
