Hoplitis (Alcidamea) claviventris (THOMSON, 1872)

Apparently polylectic but with a marked preference for flowers of Fabaceae.

Flowers visited in UK include: Ranunculus (Ranunculaceae); Trifolium repens, Lotus corniculatus, Hippocrepis comosa (Fabaceae); Erica (Ericaceae); Knautia arvensis (Dipsacaceae); Crepis and Taraxacum (Asteraceae).

Banaszak & Romasenko (1998) state that the species is polylectic, but shows a preference for Fabaceae. They list the following forage sources: Lotus, Trifolium, Melilotus (Fabaceae).

Celary (2007) states that the species strongly prefers flowers of Fabaceae, and lists Coronilla varia, Lathyrus tuberosus, Lotus corniculatus, Lotus uliginosus, Melilotus officinalis, Melilotus alba,
Onobrychis viciifolia, Trifolium pratense, Trifolium repens,
Vicia cassubica, Vicia cracca, Vicia sepium and Vicia tenuifolia. Sometimes it also visits flowers of Centaurea jacea (Asteraceae); Echium vulgare (Boraginaceae); Hypericum perforatum (Hypericaceae); Rubus fructicosus (Rosaceae); Sedum reflexum (Crassulaceae) (Westrich 1990) and Aegopodium podagraria (Apiaceae).

Müller et al state the species is polylectic with a preference for Fabaceae; additional pollen sources include Cistaceae, Lamiaceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Crassulaceae, Hypericaceae and Rosaceae (Amiet et al., 2004; Westrich, 1989; A. Müller, unpublished, based on 5 pollen samples from 5 different localities and field observations).
