The species is characteristic of the steppe zones of Europe, east as far as the mid Asian steppe; in central Europe found in warm, sandy localities (Kocourek, 1966)

Lowland/upland vegetation zones including sclerophylous biotopes (0-350m a.s.l.)(GR)(Standfuss et al., 2011)

Dry slopes, sandy-grassland habitats to the glades in humid forests. In the Caucasus and Central Asia it is confined to foothill and mountain areas, rising above 2,000 m asl. (EU)
